What’s TINA – The Tina Turner Musical about?

Rock goddess Tina Turner has been nominated for an incredible 25 Grammy Awards, winning 12 across the decades. They include 8 outright wins, 3 Grammy Hall of Fame awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. Her sell-out stadium tours have been seen by millions worldwide. Tina has sold more concert tickets than any other solo artist in music history. But how did this legend of Rock ‘n’ Roll rise from the church choir to become a global superstar?

TINA, The Tina Turner Musical follows this international Rock Icon from obscurity in Nutbush, Tennessee, through to her transformation into a giant of the music industry. TINA, The Tina Turner Musical is directed by Bafta Nominee Phyllida Lloyd, with a book by Olivier Award winner Katori Hall and is presented in association with Turner herself.

This gutsy new musical tells the no-holds-barred story of a woman who defies the rules of race, gender and age, to triumph as one of the greatest solo artists in history. From humble beginnings, singing in the congregation of a local church, Anna Mae Bullock (as Tina Turner was then known) marries Ike Turner, who shapes her early career. But their marriage is volatile and often violent. Yet somehow, Tina survives.

Despite her star quality, Tina then faces a music industry that is openly racist. Approaching forty, no record company will sign her. Then, in London, things begin to change, and Tina Turner’s career is reborn. This is the ultimate tale of strength, determination and triumph over adversity. If you didn’t already love Tina Turner when you arrive, you will when you leave…with the hits of this inspirational Rock Diva carrying you away on a wave of musical ecstasy.

Five Reasons We Love Tina Turner

1. Tina Turner was raised by her grandmother and triumphed despite a tough start in life.
2. Tina Turner became a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist in 1971 and chants to help her endure difficult times.
3. For two years after her divorce from Ike, Tina Turner played small clubs and lived with friends to allow her to pay off debts. Now that’s strength.
4. Tina Turner sang Goldeneye, which we think is the best Bond Theme ever!
5. Tina Turner starred opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome as an imperious queen named Aunty Entity, who lived in a bird’s nest throne room. Camp? You betcha!

What Tina Turner says about the TINA, The Tina Turner Musical

“It’s really important to me to have the chance to share my full story. This musical is not about my stardom. It is about the journey I took to get there. Each night I want audiences to take away from the theatre that you can turn poison into medicine.”
